Coffee Company Only Hires Felons

For most employers, the idea of hiring someone who has been in prison is uncomfortable, but for Wheaton-based Second Chance Coffee Co., it's a requirement.

"Typically, if someone checks the box that says, 'I've been convicted of a felony,' that person's application gets tossed in a garbage can, whereas with us, you have to check that box for us to even talk to you," said Pete Leonard, co-founder of Second Chance Coffee Co.

"I think what they're doing is great," said Annie Horton Krug, owner of Four Loaf Clover bakery in Clarendon Hills. "He's putting his corporate resources and talent behind a cause. It's admirable. Imagine the world we would live in if every business did that."

Krug and the Second Chance Coffee Co. have been discussing ways to collaborate—such as including Second Chance Coffee's "I Have A Bean" brand of coffee in Four Loaf Clover's holiday gift baskets. Their first collaborative effort took place on Saturday; Four Loaf Clover sold baked goods at Second Chance Coffee's open house.
