Six inmates in Miami-Dade (Fla.) jails have tested positive for a highly contagious skin infection, and corrections officials have quarantined another 21 in an effort to slow the spread of the disease. The infection -- methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus -- was first noticed on April 14 when the mother of an infected inmate at Turner Guilford Knight jail called the health department to report his condition, said Janelle Hall, a corrections spokeswoman. Since then, four other cases of the disease have turned up at TGK and one has surfaced at the Women's Detention Center. Test results are pending on the other 19 people in quarantine, she said. The department has also tested four employees who developed rashes. Three tested negative and a fourth is still pending. The infection, which is difficult to treat because it is resistant to common antibiotics, is spread by direct physical contact or by contact with the linens or laundry of infected people. The jails have implemented special procedures for dealing with laundry in the quarantine cell block. |
