SKOWHEGAN -- A Westbrook man will spend the next six years in prison for stabbing another man in the eye on the Fourth of July in Hartland.

Shane Palmer, 21, pleaded guilty Friday to elevated aggravated assault, a Class A felony, and to two other assaults on separate victims and a terrorizing charge, all stemming from the same incident. The 19-year-old victim of the assault was hospitalized with a serious stab wound, District Attorney Evert Fowle said.

"At first, the prognosis for the victim was very poor," Fowle said. "But he has recovered substantially, and the hope is that he will not have permanent injury. He's going to have permanent scarring, that's for sure. He's still receiving ongoing medical treatment."

Palmer was sentenced in Somerset County Superior Court to serve 15 years in the state Department of Corrections, with all but six years suspended. He also was ordered to serve four years of probation and is to have no contact with the victims.
