Lack Of Overseeing Allowed Abuse Of DOC Funds

SEATTLE -- A state audit raises serious questions about what some employees of the Department of Corrections are buying with state credit cards with taxpayers footing the bill.

The DOC gives fuel cards to some employees who use the department's vehicles. Regular unleaded gas, diesel fuel and a few car washes are the only expenses allowed.

According to the state auditor, the department issued 1,093 cards by the end of January 2010, and employees used only 643 of those, charging approximately $202,000 in just six months.
