| Jail Replacement Causing More Problems |

When Douglas County began the process to replace its condemned jail in the late 1990s, county officials predicted the jail would have the potential to raise revenue for the county and the county would begin seeing a return on its investment within a couple years of opening. That still hasn’t happened. Since the jail opened in 2003, it has come with a hefty price tag, adding millions to the property tax levy annually in spite of millions earned from charges for housing prisoners for outside law enforcement agencies. Now, the Douglas County Board is putting the pieces in place to find out why expectations for the new jail haven’t become reality. The board appointed Chief Deputy Charlie Law to serve as jail administrator to get a handle on the issues that have made the jail a costlier venture than expected when officials broke ground in 1999.
