WOODBRIDGE — The hiring of an ex-convict as an emergency medical technician has once again thrown into question Woodbridge's reliance on independent first-aid squads, which operate with minimal local oversight. Anthony Mercado, 31, a full-time EMT supervisor at the Woodbridge Township Ambulance and Rescue Squad (WTARS), was placed on administrative leave Wednesday after the Home News Tribune and township officials were alerted to his 1999 conviction for first-degree armed robbery. He was released in 2003 after serving four years in the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility, and applied for an EMT certification in 2005.
