| Officers Slacking When Inmate Escaped |

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Two corrections officers did not follow proper procedures Tuesday before an inmate escaped from UNC Hospitasl in Chapel Hill, according to Robert Lewis, the Director of the Division of Prisons at the N.C. Department of Corrections. Farley Bernard, 46, who is serving a 25 year sentence for kidnapping and robbery, should have been wearing handcuffs or leg irons during his entire visit to the hospital, Lewis said. But officers allowed him to take off the restraints to put on a robe. Bernard bolted and drove off in a UNC police car. He led officers on a chase on I-40 that ended when he wrecked in Alamance County. “No reason for that inmate to not be restrained in some manner,” Lewis said. Read More. |
