| County Budget Optimistic Despite Inmate Numbers |

The number of inmates in the county jail is still rising, but so are sales tax receipts, giving the cash-strapped Pottawatomie County Public Safety Center Trust reason to feel hopeful. And that’s not all. Jail director Sid Stell told his board Monday that a new contract has been signed with Carver Center in Oklahoma City and another with Tinker Air Force Base is “ready to go.” Carver Center is a “walk away” program where inmates work outside the facility during the day and return at night. It is operated by the private correctional company Avalon. The Shawnee jail will be used for program participants with “disciplinary actions.” Stell said two such people were brought to the jail last week, and a dozen or so more are expected from Tulsa this week.
