ALAMOSA — Seventeen years ago, Nov. 18, 1993, Robert “Smoke” Thompson, 22, shot Amy Casanova in the throat. She died, and he was arrested on a charge of second degree murder.

According to information that came out in court in 1993 and early 1994, Thompson had come to Alamosa ostensibly to attend Adams State College, but in reality he was here to recruit members for the Denver gang Tre Deuce Crips.

While in Alamosa he lived in a residence off Highway 17. Casanova was at a party at his residence when she was shot.

Thompson plea bargained and the charge was reduced to manslaughter. He was sentenced to 10 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections where he served the entire 10 years, and was released in 2004.
