| Community Meeting Shows Support To Keep Prison Open |

HOCKINSON — About 130 supporters of Larch Corrections Center braved torrential rains Wednesday to attend a community forum on the future of the prison, which is slated for closure Feb. 1. But they heard more questions than answers in a two-hour session that bristled with emotion and determination to reverse the Department of Corrections decision and keep Larch open. Larch employees, Department of Natural Resources crew foremen, Forest Service officials, former inmates, elected officials and union representatives spoke at Hockinson High School about what Larch means to the community. Noticeably absent from the meeting were managers from the corrections department or from DNR, the agency that supervises the firefighting crews based at Larch. A documentary on the Yacolt Burn set the tone for the meeting, describing the devastating fire of 1902 that burned 239,000 acres of Southwest Washington and set the stage for the establishment of a prison forest camp at Larch.
