The Lackawanna County Prison Board is asking the state Department of Corrections to provide an interim warden to manage the jail while it searches for a permanent replacement for former Warden Janine Donate, county and state officials said Thursday. There is precedent for the move. In 2003, in the midst of a burgeoning scandal involving the misuse of inmate labor and other improprieties, James T. Wynder Jr., a deputy superintendent at the state prison at Waymart, was appointed interim warden at the county prison while on loan from the DOC. The request for state assistance comes as prison board members have expressed a preference for an expansive, methodical search to find a successor for Mrs. Donate, who resigned Wednesday after five years as the county's top jailer.
