At a management meeting of the Utah Department of Corrections last Wednesday, Mike Chabries announced he is stepping down as director of the department, and Gov. Olene Walker named Scott Carver as acting director. "Mikes has done a remarkable job and has faced many challenges," said Walker. "He had maintained good morale without the department during difficult budget cuts and has made tremendous strides in rehabilitating inmates and developing beneficial programs, such as education and vocational training. He will be missed." Chabries will leave office August 1 following a 35 year career in the corrections and law enforcement field. As executive director of the Department of Corrections, he received national recognition for his innovative re-entry initiative that reduced recidivism by 8 percent a year during a time of reduced corrections budgets nationwide. During his tenure, Chabries developed a team that stressed inmate education, vocational training and rehabilitation. Chabries is leaving the public safety arena to become the off-campus coordinator for Weber State University's Salt Lake Community College Program. Carver will assume responsibilities as acting director. Carver started his law enforcement career with the Ogden Police Department in 1975 and came to the Department of Corrections in 1987 as an agent for adult probation and parole. He has served in most of the department's managerial positions. |
