For Nicholas Campanale, the details of June 17, 1982 — the night he found his wife, 21-year-old son and a family friend dead in his Mira Mesa home — are etched into his senses.

He remembers the smell of coffee burning in the kitchen. An overturned vacuum cleaner and flower pot near the stairs. And the fixed stare of his youngest son.

“I could see my son on the floor of his bedroom,” Campanale, now 72, recalled. “I knew he was dead.”
