A month before employee Donna Gross was slain on a Napa State Hospital patio, union members said they sent a petition to administrators requesting better safety measures at the facility. Nurses, psychiatric technicians, administrative assistants and others signed the petition after a patient transferred to Napa State Hospital from the California Department of Corrections attacked staff on multiple occasions, said representatives for the Service Employees International Union, which represents 1,100 Napa State Hospital employees. “We’re just not a match for these individuals,” Rosa Sanchez, a nurse at Napa State Hospital, said after attending a rally in Sacramento this month to demand improved security measures.
