More women are behind bars across the state, leading to overcrowded prisons and many broken families.

"It's a problem not only in the institutions, but also outside the institutions," county Commissioner Francis V. McAndrew, who was county sheriff for 14 years, said.

The number of women in Schuylkill County Prison hit an all-time high this year, peaking at 54 in September. That month, women made up 19.2 percent of the prison population, the highest recorded percentage. In October, it dropped to 17.8 percent.

In 2000, women made up about 10 percent of prisoners in the county jail and the percentage hovered around that number throughout the decade. Last year, they were only 9.68 percent of the prison population. The county prison remains above its 240-inmate maximum, as it has for much of the past five years.

Women may very well be committing more crimes but the major cause of increased incarceration of women is that we're just now seeing the full results of the feminist movement. We now have a generation of prosecutors and judges that weren't around during the "age of chivalry" when women were protected and treated more lightly.
