| WA Prison Closure A Sign Of Things To Come |

The uncertain fate of the McNeil Island Corrections Center is all but sealed with the recent announcement that the state Department of Corrections intends to close it down next year. The aging prison, which narrowly avoided closure last legislative session amid efforts by state legislators to patch together a budget hemorrhaging red ink, can no longer avoid the budget ax. The state is struggling with a $900 million deficit through June of 2011, up from $520 million in September. More than half of the increase in the budget shortfall stems from the voters’ short-sighted decision in the November election to pass Initiative 1107, which eliminated a new tax on soda, candy, bottled water and some canned goods, set to take effect Thursday.
