Most of the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison was placed on lockdown Tuesday after four inmates were stabbed and seriously injured inside the prison's maximum-security unit. Prison officials have reportedly launched a recent crackdown on inmate gangs at the institution, but they declined to say if the incident was gang-related. Iowa Department of Corrections spokesman Fred Scaletta described the incident as "isolated but serious." He said the four inmates were all found seriously injured by a staff member at about 11:30 a.m. in an undisclosed location inside the prison. He declined to identify the injured prisoners, who were taken by ambulance to Fort Madison Community Hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. No prison employees were hurt, and officials said the incident is under investigation. "It is unknown at this time if other inmates were involved or who may have been the aggressors in the incident," Scaletta said. Read More. |
