MI Killer Won't Get Out Early

MT. MORRIS TWP -- The man convicted of scaring a woman to death after breaking into her home more than 25 years ago will have to wait at least two more years before he gets another chance to get out of prison.

The state Department of Corrections says Gov. Jennifer Granholm has denied John E. Aslin's request to commute the remainder of his life sentence "after extensive review." The sentence was handed down after Aslin's 1984 conviction for causing Ella M. Stephens' fatal heart attack after he broke into her home in the Beecher area and robbed her.

A jury convicted Aslin of first-degree murder with no chance of parole in the landmark case even though he never used a traditional weapon to cause the death.

Aslin has said he never meant to harm Stephens and earlier this year, the state Parole and Commutation Board recommended the governor commute the remainder of his sentence.
