| Violence Leads To Shakedown At Iowa Jail |

A shakedown of cells was conducted Wednesday at the Iowa State Penitentiary at Fort Madison, where four inmates were hospitalized with stab wounds. Three of the inmates were serving life sentences for murder, although all had good prison records because they were assigned to a program in which inmates pre-build houses for Habitat for Humanity. The houses are later reconstructed on lots elsewhere in the state. "The incident ... appears to be an isolated dispute amongst the four" inmates, said Fred Scaletta, Iowa Department of Corrections spokesman. Prison officials identified the inmates involved in Tuesday's incident as Derek Smith, 32, serving a life sentence for first-degree murder from Marshall County; Heath Burgess, 28, serving time for second-degree sexual abuse and first-degree robbery from Appanoose County; Joshua George, 30, serving life for first-degree murder from Franklin County; and Toby Michael, 35, serving life for first-degree murder from Polk County.
