HUNTSVILLE, AL -- A Huntsville man convicted in 1989 of killing his wife with a shotgun is set to be executed on Jan. 13, the Alabama Supreme Court announced Thursday.

Leroy White was 29 years old in August 1988 when he murdered his estranged wife, 35-year-old Ruby White. He is scheduled to die by lethal injection at Holman Prison in Atmore.

An execution of an inmate from Madison County is rare, according to Alabama Department of Corrections records. Of the 202 executions carried out in Alabama since 1927, only three inmates have been from Madison County. Steven Thompson, who was convicted in a 1984 murder on Green Mountain, was the last such inmate.

There are now 203 inmates on death row in Alabama, including 98 white men, 98 black men and three men of other races. Four women also face execution.
