Attempted Escapee Tries Money Scam

SCRANTON – An exchange of letters filed in federal court reveals that Scott Bolton, the inmate injured in a Luzerne County prison escape with Hugo Selenski, tried to have the $5,000 awarded to him in a lawsuit with the county forwarded to a third party in Florida, possibly to avoid paying court costs and restitution.

In a handwritten letter to U.S. District Judge Richard P. Conaboy dated Nov. 23, Bolton claims his attorney, Sean McDonough, had agreed to send a settlement check worth $5,000 to a woman in Florida “handling my finances,” but that the check had been sent to the Department of Corrections at Coal Township, where Bolton is housed. He asked Conaboy to help “correct the error.”

Conaboy wrote a letter dated Wednesday to McDonough asking him to respond to Bolton’s inquiry. On Thursday, McDonough filed a written reply noting he had talked to a person at the Coal Township prison, and that the money could not be returned.
