CA Prison To Create Jobs, Money

An estimated 5,500 construction jobs and more than 2,400 mostly medical permanent full-time jobs will be created soon in San Joaquin County, where California is building its largest new prison in decades.

Local contractors and trades workers have a crack at landing those relatively high-paying construction jobs, which will begin in spring. And the state is strategizing on how it will fill the medical positions the prison will create when it opens three years from now.

The 1,722-bed prison, called the California Health Care Facility, will centralize the state's care for inmates with significant physical and mental health care needs.

The project will cost taxpayers $906 million, including $738 million for construction. Bidding has begun for the overarching design and building of the prison, which will total more than 1.2 million square feet. Seven giant California construction firms are vying for the job, and they are being encouraged to hire local subcontractors and workers.
