Child Killer Before Parole Board For 2nd Time

Convicted child killer Diane Downs comes up for her second parole hearing on Friday, and it may be a long time before she has another one.

A new state law, effective since January, grants Oregon's parole board authority to lengthen the gap between parole hearings to as long as 10 years on a case-by-case basis.

State law used to require release hearings every two years for more than 1,500 prison inmates eligible for parole consideration.

Lane County District Attorney Alex Gardner said in a recent letter to the parole board that "offenders such as Downs are precisely why" the law was amended by the 2009 Legislature.

He urged the board to refuse parole for Downs again on Friday and suspend any further parole consideration for a decade.
