Inmates Relearn How To Work Again

EVERETT — Frigid gusts already were blowing strong at Paine Field on a recent morning when a jet landed, sending Jimmie Yoeun’s red cap blowing across a nearby parking lot where he and other men were doing landscape work.

Another member of the crew, Howard Bergman, ran over to trap the flying cap emblazoned with the letters MCC — Monroe Correctional Complex.

The letters were about the only tip-off that the seven men — carrying shovels, weed trimmers and leaf blowers — were from the minimum-security unit of the state prison. On this windy day, they were tending the grounds at the Snohomish County airport.

“I’ve been sitting in prison for 12 years. I’m one year short now,” said Bergman, 41, who is serving time for robbery. “This job is great because it’s teaching me how to put in a full day of work again.”
