| Killer Attacks DA, Sentenced To More Time |

Despite a plea agreement that he spend no more time in prison, Michael Mayton was sentenced to a consecutive five-year term for attacking Dubuque County Attorney Ralph Potter. Judge Monica Ackley issued the sentence Monday morning at the Dubuque County Courthouse. Mayton now will serve a maximum of 60 years in prison: 50 years for second-degree murder, five years for felony assault and five years for willful injury, served consecutively. Shortly after a jury pronounced Mayton guilty of murder on July 9, he lifted his cuffed hands in the air and struck Potter as they exited the courtroom. In exchange for a guilty plea to willful injury, the state Attorney General's Office recommended that Mayton serve his sentence at the same time as his other prison terms and agreed not to file the charge as a habitual offender, which could have tacked on additional time.
