New Jersey authorities have nabbed a man suspected of using an ice pick to threaten and rob women at high-rise apartments in Manhattan and the Bronx, officials said Monday. John Martinez was identified as a suspect after the New York Police Department received an anonymous tip from a caller, a law-enforcement official with knowledge of the case said. One of the victims of the robbery spree picked out his photo from an array and he was declared a fugitive from justice. Mr. Martinez, 39 years old, was arrested in Cliffside Park, N.J. He was being held in Bergen County on a parole violation, the official said. A spokeswoman for the Bergen County Sheriff said Mr. Martinez was awaiting an extradition hearing. He wasn't suspected in any crimes in New Jersey, the spokeswoman, Jennifer Monaghan, said. The NYPD released several images captured on surveillance video depicting a tall and heavy-set man lingering in building hallways, beginning Nov. 10 in the massive residential development in the Bronx called Co-Op City. About two weeks later, three incidents of robbery occurred in Manhattan's Stuyvesant Town; the suspect's description and modus operandi matched the thefts in the Bronx. Read More. |
