MERRILL -- A registered sex offender convicted of raping a woman and trying to force two other women into his car in the 1980s will be released from prison next week and returned to Merrill, according to the Department of Corrections. Douglas Marten, 52, of Merrill has been in prison since 1987 and will be released Dec. 14, Merrill Police Chief Ned Seubert said Monday. A Lincoln County jury convicted Marten in May 1987 on three counts of second-degree sexual assault after he was accused of forcibly sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman on July 4, 1986, according to the Merrill Police Department and Wausau Daily Herald archives. Marten also pleaded guilty in 1987 to two counts of false imprisonment.
