Castle Rock is an early entrant in the competition for a proposed new state prison processing center. City officials announced late last month that they would send a letter of interest to the Department of Corrections asking to be considered as the site for this 1,000-bed facility. Make no mistake, there will be competition for this proposed Westside Reception Center. Given the down economy and sky-high unemployment rates here and in many other parts of the state, the competition is likely to be intense. The state's plans to construct a new prison processing center west of the Cascades is correctly seen by a number of small, economically challenged municipalities as a rare opportunity to add jobs and broaden the tax base. Castle Rock city officials are wise to seize it. There will be time enough to measure public support. A decision on where this $167 million facility will be built won't be made for another year or more, according to Daily News reporter Barbara LaBoe.
