| AZ Juvenile System To Remain In State Control |

Arizona legislators on Monday recommended new life for the state Department of Juvenile Corrections, an agency nearly put out of business due to the state's budget crisis. Authorization for the department is to end July 1 unless renewed by the Legislature, but lawmakers in an oversight hearing voted 6-1 to recommend that the full Legislature reauthorize the department for five more years. The joint House-Senate hearing follows the shelving of a budget-balancing proposal to close the department and shift its responsibilities to counties. Counties had argued that it was unfair to dump the state's budget trouble on them. The budget enacted last spring for the current fiscal year kept the department intact and instead called for a study to consider possible changes to the department's responsibilities. Read More. |
