| NC Prison Populations Getting Costly |

CONCORD, N.C. -- A higher than expected number of inmates may force Cabarrus County commissioners to spend up to $975,000 over the next several months to house convicted criminals and individuals charged with crimes in neighboring counties’ jails. In August, Sheriff Brad Riley told commissioners crowding in the old jail was forcing the county to send inmates to other counties, paying those counties for housing the inmates. Cabarrus County had 73 inmates housed at other county jails in July. The number has increased each month since then. By October, Cabarrus County had 179 inmates housed in other counties’ jails. The old Cabarrus County jail also is housing more female inmates. In the past, only two blocks, or nine beds, and eight single cells were necessary. Now, three blocks, or 27 beds, and eight single cells are required to handle the female inmate population and some inmates are still sleeping on the floor. Cabarrus County will open a new jail in downtown Concord on July 1. But county officials say opening the new jail early will not save money. Read More. |
