| Emergency Meeting To Discuss DOC Cuts |

Facing a current budget deficit that tops $1 billion, Gov. Chris Gregoire will call lawmakers back for a special session Saturday morning. Gregoire made the announcement Thursday afternoon. "If all goes well and the creek don't rise, we'll go home Saturday night. Who knows what hour, but Saturday night," Gregoire said. The Legislature, which is controlled by Democrats, won't come up with a plan to put the budget back in the black on Saturday. Legislative leaders say they have an agreement that will address about $784 million of the $1 billion deficit to the current year's budget. Leaders say that about $200 million of that will recognize across-the-board cuts Gregoire previously ordered. The Legislature has a bipartisan agreement to add another $584 million in additional savings. That includes about $200 million of federal education money that is being diverted for general fund expenses. Read More. |
