One inmate was stabbed and a second was injured yesterday during a fight at the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater, authorities said. Neither man - apparently the only two involved in the fight - suffered life-threatening injuries, and the stabbing victim was being treated at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Dennis Benson, deputy commissioner of the Department of Corrections said. He would not release the names of the inmates, say what prompted the fight or give information about the crimes they had committed that landed them in the facility, located in Bayport, Minn. But Benson did say the men were in the segregation unit of the prison, what he described as a "prison within the prison" for those who had violated the facility's regulations. The problems began about 7:30 a.m. during an exercise period. When it was over, one of the inmates had been stabbed with a homemade weapon and a second was injured. The fight resulted in the entire facility, population 1,300, according to the state's Web site, being put on "lock up" status, meaning all the inmates are locked in their rooms. Benson said this type of incident doesn't happen often, but statistics were not available. A prison special investigations unit will work with local law enforcement to determine whether the case should go through the court system or the prison's due process system, Benson said. |
