High Tech ID System In RI Prison

CRANSTON, R.I.—Rhode Island officials say they've started using biometric eye scanners at the state's main prison to keep tabs on prisoner identities.

The Department of Corrections says plans were under way last summer for the technology. The process was sped up after an inmate escaped by posing as another inmate who was up for parole. He was later captured in New York.

The two eye scanners at the Rhode Island Adult Correctional Institute in Cranston were given to the state at no cost, and maintenance is about $800 yearly.
