| Phone Alert Ends With Counterfeiters' Arrests |

Three years after many Solvang businesses installed a phone system to alert merchants of potential shoplifters or counterfeiters, two people were arrested last week after they allegedly tried to pass counterfeit $100 bills at Solvang businesses. “The man came into my shop and my clerk said he couldn’t take his money after noticing it was fake and called the Sheriff’s Department. I recorded a message on the alert system and about 10 minutes later he was arrested in another shop,” said David Rasmussen of Rasmussen’s Solvang. Bryan Steve Pelaez, 33, an at-large parolee from North Hills wanted by the state Department of Corrections, and his girlfriend, 25-year-old Alexandra Lee Cleveland of Burbank, were arrested Dec. 6 and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.
