A few inmates from the state Department of Corrections minimum-security unit are using their construction skills to help transform the former American Concrete Equipment site on Creek Drive into a new, larger minimum-security prison and parole office. During its eight-year quest to find a permanent home for a minimum-security unit in western South Dakota, DOC has weathered public resistance and a legal challenge from its neighbor Perdue Woodwork. After purchasing the property for $2.2 million, DOC expects to invest slightly more than $5.6 million converting the property into parole offices and a residential unit designed to house and care for up to 420 inmates.
