After nearly three years of debate over its benefit to Sauk County taxpayers, a for-profit section of the county jail that opened in 2008 will close today. Ten project employees hired to operate jail Unit A, as it is called, will work their final shift today, Sheriff-elect and Chief Deputy Chip Meister told county supervisors Tuesday. "As of the second shift, we will be closing Pod A," Meister said. The Sauk County Board authorized Sheriff Randy Stammen to hire 14.5 new employees and open Unit A in 2008. With the newly available 94 beds, Stammen entered a contract to make more than 100 jail beds available for rent to the state Department of Corrections. Read More. |
