The Battle of the Badges Law Enforcement Basketball Tournament was first organized in November 2000 in the honor of the Maryland State Trooper Corporal Edward M. Toatley, who was killed in the line of duty.
The tournament was organized to raise money for a Scholarship Fund and to bring Law Enforcement Officers from all aspects of law enforcement i.e. police, corrections, sheriffs, probation and parole, firefighters and EMS together for camaraderie and networking within the community of law enforcement. In the last 9 years, the Battle of the Badges has raised over $9,500.00 in scholarship money for students from Dundalk High School and the community of Turner Station, Maryland.
The tournament has had teams participate from far away as Connecticut and Las Vegas. In 2009, the tournament was played in honor of Cpl. Courtney G. Brooks of Maryland Transportation Authority Police. The Battle of the Badges is more than just playing basketball; it’s providing scholarships for worthy students to continue their education while bringing professional men and women together from around the USA in the community of law enforcement to play a sport they love.
