A Hampton, Va. sheriff's deputy has been charged with giving an inmate a handcuff key so he could possibly escape from custody, police said last week. Benjamin Delmar Sumter, 21, of Yorktown, was charged last Monday. The case began June 22, when an inmate at Hampton City Jail notified a staff member that another inmate had a handcuff key. Police investigators determined that Sumter had provided the inmate with the key, according to Cpl. Jimmie Wideman, police spokesman. The inmate with the key was facing felony charges of burglary and larceny of a firearm. He never had an opportunity to escape, police said. |
