| SC DOC At Odds With Fire Marshal |

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- State senators heard testimony Thursday from the public and a state agency director about the State Fire Marshal's Office and how its rulings have cost businesses and taxpayers thousands of dollars needlessly, they say. A recent audit of the Office of State Fire Marshal says businesses, churches, schools and day care centers have had to waste money to replace fire extinguishers that worked fine. A state Senate subcommittee has been holding hearings on the audit. Rev. Leroy Lowery, pastor of the Southside Free Will Baptist Church in Darlington, told senators the church experienced problems with a fire inspector after opening a kindergarten program. "We were told we had to replace our fire extinguishers because the manufacturer had stopped making that particular model. These extinguishers were in perfectly good working order, but were replaced by our vendor. His extinguishers, our money," he said. "We believe this to be a gross conflict of interest when the man condemning our property could then sell us his property at his price." Read More. |
