Missouri Gov. Looking For DOC Solutions

Top leaders of the Missouri Association of Prosecuting Attorneys from around the state were scheduled to sit down with us Friday and discuss a wide range of public safety issues — including a potentially busy legislative agenda in 2011 that could include the criminal justice system.

Flight cancellations short-circuited the meeting and pushed it to a later date. But the delay is auspicious because it coincided with a serious challenge Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon posed on Thursday — one the prosecutors should consider in the interim.

Missouri faces a budget gap of between $500 million and $700 million in the coming year. A significant part of the shortfall could be made up if the state would start to collect sales tax on Internet sales and raise its cigarette tax to the national average. But the governor has shown no interest in these revenue solutions.
