Cheshire - The state Department of Correction calls the housing units at the Manson Youth Institution "cottages," but no ocean breezes blow through open windows. The dank smells of body odor and cleaning fluids are trapped inside these drab buildings, as are the 500-odd boys and young men who have been charged with serious crimes and removed from society. Manson, a high-security prison about 63 miles from New London, is now home to four of the six teenagers charged in connection with the Oct. 29 murder of Matthew Chew. Idris Elahi, Matias Perry, Rahshad Perry and Marquis Singleton, who are 17, are at the Cheshire prison. Tyree Bundy and Brian Rabell, both 18, are at adult facilities, as is sometimes the case with 18-year-olds charged with serious crimes, according to Department of Correction spokesman Brian Garnett.
