CHESTER, Ill. -- Workers at the Menard Correctional Center in southern Illinois received more than $1.5 million in workers' compensation settlements for injuries to their hands, wrists and elbows, according to public records. Guards say the injuries were caused by repetitive actions, like locking and unlocking cells, The Belleville News-Democrat reported Monday. The newspaper cited public records from the Illinois Workers' Compensation Commission that show the taxpayer-funded settlements are between nearly $22,000 and $120,000. Fifty-five workers have applied for compensation, and 51 are guards at the maximum security facility. The figure is nearly one in every ten officers. Thirty cases are pending. Employees also have received more than $195,000 in missed work payments. Read More. |
