Gov. Jennifer Granholm has been the most merciful chief executive in modern Michigan history, and possibly of all time, as measured by the number of prisoners she has ordered released by commutation of sentence. Granholm has issued commutation orders for 179 inmates during the last eight years, most of them in the last three years, when she has ordered at least one release a week. But it appears Granholm won't be running up her numbers in the final days, as has been the habit of some governors (former Michigan Gov. James Blanchard ordered five commutations two days after Christmas in 1990). Read More. |
