DEDHAM, MA, Dec. 20, 2010 – Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti said he is pleased with the growth of the emergency alert system that he administers in Norfolk County with the cooperation of area police and fire departments. A total of 19 Norfolk County communities have fully joined the Rapid Alert Notification System (RANS), which is designed to send voice messages directly to the home phones of area residents in the event of a public safety emergency. “This is a versatile system that directly and quickly alerts residents,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “We can make the list of recipients as large or as small as necessary, based on the type of urgent situation, whether it’s a hurricane or an MWRA water emergency or a gas leak or anything in between.” Milton Police Chief Richard Wells, whose town has used the system on several occasions, said, “Clearly in today’s day and age, it’s important for public safety agencies to be able to get messages out to the public very quickly.” Quincy Fire Chief Joseph Barron said, “It’s certainly a valuable tool. We’re grateful to Sheriff Bellotti for putting this system together.” So far, the communities that have joined RANS include: Avon, Braintree, Brookline, Canton, Dedham, Foxborough, Franklin, Holbrook, Medway, Millis, Milton, Norfolk, Plainville, Quincy, Sharon, Walpole, Westwood, Weymouth and Wrentham. The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to work with other communities to bring them into the system whenever those communities decide to do so. Sheriff Bellotti noted that RANS, which is funded through Homeland Security grants, works well as a regional tool that crosses municipal boundaries if the situation calls for it. The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office maps out the area of recipients and issues alerts at the request of public safety officials in participating RANS communities. System administrators currently are investigating the best ways to incorporate residents’ cell phones into the system. |
