| Financial Study To Be Conducted On Jails |

A new study being commissioned by the Tippecanoe County sheriff will help shed light on the actual cost of housing each inmate at the jail. The county commissioners on Monday approved a $5,000 contract with Maximus Consulting Services of Carmel. The firm will determine the personnel, utility, facility and other costs that go toward each individual's incarceration at the county jail, said Sheriff Tracy Brown. The study, the first of its kind in Tippecanoe County, is being paid for using jail commissary funds and will take roughly three months to complete. One benefit of the study will be the opportunity to set a daily incarceration rate to use in housing federal prisoners, if the opportunity arises in Tippecanoe County. Brown said it's unlikely the state will change its $35 per diem for housing state prisoners, but pointed to lobbying efforts possible if the figures prove that the county is spending more than that daily amount to keep people from the Department of Corrections.
