A knife fight at Oklahoma State Penitentiary has resulted in two inmates being injured and the discovery of five knives. Prison spokesperson Lee Mann confirmed the fight and the discovery of the knives after the News-Capital & Democrat contacted her and asked about them. The fight occurred on July 6 on the exercise yard on the prison's south side, according to Mann. "One inmate had a homemade knife about five inches long and the other had a sticker about eight inches long," Mann said. She said one of the inmates had "superficial wounds" to the right calf and the left side of the head and another had "minor scrapes and abrasions" after the fight. Mann said the inmates came off the yard when a correctional officer told them to stop fighting. Inmates Ricardo Aquino and Nikie Jones were the inmates involved in the fight, Mann said. When correctional officers searched the exercise yard and the area around it, they found three more knives that were hidden, Mann said. Asked about the knives while being interviewed about another matter, DOC Director Ron Ward said, "Good searches turn these things up." Ward said it's not unusual to find knives during searches at a prison. However, the News-Capital & Democrat noted the five knives were not found during a search of cells, but outside in or near an exercise yard, prompting some correctional officers to conclude it was unusual. "That's probably accurate," Ward said. "You've got to conduct good searches." Prior to the fight, both inmates involved were part of the general population on the prison's A Unit, according to Mann. Both are now on a disciplinary unit, she said. |
