An inmate who was being treated at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center escaped briefly last Friday but was arrested about 20 minutes later. Michael Romero, 28, managed to get away from a private security officer watching him in an eighth-floor room at UCSD Medical Center shortly before 1 p.m. Authorities found the escapee nearby and took him into custody without incident, he said. Romero is serving time at the George F. Bailey Detention Facility in southern San Diego County for possession of a controlled substance and writing bad checks, according to sheriff's public information officer Chris Saunders. |
