| Helpful Convict Gets Pardoned |

Gov. Bill Ritter granted pardons to 20 people Wednesday, including a man who has devoted much of his post-conviction life to helping teens and ex-convicts escape or avoid gangs. The Rev. Leon Kelly, who is known on the street as simply "The Rev," got the news straight from the governor that his 1979 aggravated robbery conviction would be pardoned. Kelly, executive director of Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives, has worked with tens of thousands of inner- city kids to help them stay away from gangs or escape gang connections. "He's just such a committed anti- gang advocate," said Ritter, a former Denver district attorney who called Kelly to his office to deliver the news. "I've seen him in court, I've seen him in community meetings, I've seen him on the street helping kids. He was working in a way that made a difference in kids' lives." Read More. |
