| Technicality Will Not Get Rapist New Trial |

A motion for a new trial for a convicted rapist serving a life sentence was denied in Jones County Superior Court last week. Floyd Buford, the attorney for Michael Lynn Turner who was convicted of rape by a Jones County jury in June of 2009, was back in court Dec. 14 asking for a new trial for his client. The rape trial lasted four days, and a technicality in the sentencing brought the defen dantback to the courtroom a month later. Chief Judge William Prior Jr. sentenced Turner to 30 years to life in prison. When that sentence did not fit the standards of the Georgia Department of Corrections, the defenda nt wa s brought back into the courtroom, and Prior resentenced him to life in prison. Turner was 41 at the time of the crime, and his victim had been 16 years of age for just 10 days. She was spending the night with the defendant’s daughter and another friend. It was brought out during the trial that Turner furnished the girls with alcohol and marijuana and then took advantage of the 16-year-old’s debilitated state. The victim testified, as did the two friends. The victim’s best friend was the catalyst for the story of the rape being told and the friend also testi fied to the events before and after the crime occurred. Read More. |
