Almost four years after a Coatesville, Pa. man was shot and killed leaving a bar, two men currently in prison for other crimes have been charged with his murder and another inmate was charged with trying to kill him earlier. Antonio Dupree Thomas, 25, and George Edward Bates, 27, were charged this week with murder and related charges in the slaying of Terrance M. "Manny" Maxie, 27, who was shot in the back as he left a South Coatesville bar on October 13, 2000. Akram "Ish" Jones, 27, an inmate at the state prison in Label, was charged only with attempted murder because authorities said he shot himself in the hand in an earlier, failed attempt to kill Maxie. "The overriding factor (in the delay in filing charges) was that these men are serving long prison terms and they're not a threat to the community," said Chief Deputy District Attorney Robert Miller of Chester County. "We had the advantage of time on our side to corroborate statements and to corroborate Bates' statement that Thomas was the shooter," he said. The charges were filed last Monday. Thomas, currently serving a 16- to 33-year sentence for robbery at the state prison at Houtzdale, was arraigned in District Court in Coatesville last Wednesday. His preliminary hearing was set for July 28. Thomas told a judge he did not know if he would hire a lawyer or need a public defender. Bates, who is incarcerated at the state prison in Coal, was expected to be arraigned last Thursday. Maxie, the victim, had had previous run-ins with police over drug offenses, but family members said he was trying to turn his life around. |
